PSI Senior Scientist Amanda Hendrix was the keynote speaker at the SciX 2022 conference in Covington, Kentucky Oct. 2-7. Her talk was titled “The Future of Space Exploration: Earth-Based, Deep Space-Based, Robotic and Human.”

The scientific theme of the conference was “the analytical chemistry of space exploration,” and Hendrix kicked off the week sharing her insights on space exploration and research, to communicate the excitement of exploring the “final frontier” and setting the tone for the rest of the conference.

Hendrix discussed exciting recent results in several areas, linking them to future activities as prioritized in the new Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey. She covered highlights on ocean worlds, especially Europa, Enceladus and Triton; the latest results on lunar hydration and their relationship to the Artemis program; the use, by the NASA Solar System Exploration and Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI) Toolbox for Research and Exploration (TREX) team, of a robot in analog field environments to do autonomous science, preparing for lunar exploration; sample return from Mars, Bennu and Ryugu; and JWST.

Related programming during the conference included molecular and atomic spectroscopies in remote locations (e.g. studies made with systems on Mars with Perseverance and JWST) and on returned samples, and metabolomic studies to facilitate human space travel

SciX, presented by the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies, is a leading conference for analytical chemists. SciX has a unique blend of technical sessions covering all fields of analytical chemistry, cutting-edge technology in the exhibit floor, and unrivaled networking opportunities.
