Research Interests

Dr. Seungyeol (Steven) Lee graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a Ph.D. in the Department of Geoscience while serving as a research assistant at the NASA Astrobiology Institute. His graduate studies focused on nanominerals in earth and planetary systems, such as new mineral observations, clay minerals, and short/medium-range ordered nanophases using integrated methods of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray/Neutron pair distribution function, high-resolution TEM, and Z-contrast images to characterize detailed structural, mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic information.

Dr. Lee joined the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) as a postdoctoral fellow. He studied the thermal decomposition of the Murchison CM2 carbonaceous chondrite for implications of space weathering processes for sample return missions. He has a strong interest in applying synchrotron techniques and electron beams to characterize the detailed mineralogical and petrological information of meteorites, samples returned from various planetary missions, and Mars analog samples. Current research focuses on (1) carbonaceous meteorites; (2) Mars geology with Earth-based analogs; (3) sample return missions (JAXA’s Hayabusa2 and NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex); and (4) shock metamorphic experiments.
