Research Interests

  • Planetary geologic mapping of solid surface bodies including the Moon, Mars and Galilean Satellites (Jovian moons)
  • Geomorphology of aeolian, glacial, volcanic, impact crater and mass-wasting features on planetary surfaces
  • Use of spacecraft remote sensing data in GIS for digital mapping and analyses
  • Use of image processing software for planetary datasets
  • Use of Spatial Statistics, Regression Modeling, and R for analyses of GIS data

Professional History

Frank Chuang received his MS in Geology from Arizona State University in 2000 and joined PSI in 2003 as a member of its science support staff. In addition to participating in NASA-funded research projects with PSI staff members, he maintains PSI's collection of networked software licenses (ArcGIS for Desktop, ENVI, IDL, MatLab, Mathematica, and Trimble) and institute field equipment. As part of the Education and Public Outreach team, Frank maintains PSI's "Explorer's Guide to Impact Craters" and all educational resources on the institute's website.

His professional activities include external reviewer for NASA's Mars Data Analysis Program, peer-reviewer for major research journals (Icarus, Planetary and Space Science, Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets, Geophysical Research Letters), and chapter reviewer for various popular and professional science books. He has also participated as a member of the science team for HiRISE, a camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft.
